Carver discovered his interest in writing after taking a creative writing course in college. Cathedral: A Lesson for the Ages Raymond Carver 's short story, "Cathedral," portrays a story in which many in today 's society can relate. We are introduced from the first sentence of the story to a man that seems to be perturbed and agitated. As readers, we are initially unsure to the reasoning 's behind the man 's discomfort.
The man, who seems to be a direct portrayal of Raymond Carver himself, shows his ignorance by stereotyping a blind man by the name of Robert, who has come to stay with. A New Perspective Everyone at one point has judged a book by its cover. The narrator has never interacted with a blind person before the day where his wife invites her friend, who is named Robert, to stay.
The narrator and Robert have never met, but the narrator has a strong dislike towards Robert before meeting. Most people believed they could not live without cathedrals which brought them closer to their God. Similarly, people place so much importance to the. Although from an observing point of view nothing more in the story happens then a blind man assisting the narrator in drawing a cathedral. Although as known, the narrator's experience radically differs from what is actually "observed".
He is enlightened and opened up to a new world of vision and imagination. This brief experience will have a life long effect on him.
The reason. Carver portrays these attitudes through the development and conflict between his characters. As a round. The story takes place in the husbands home somewhere in the East Coast near Connecticut. As the husband has a drink and waits for.

The setting and theme are easily found and used to analyze this story. The story Cathedral is about a husband and wife who has a problem with Robert blind manwhose wife died and came to become a guest in their house.
The husband. The story, revolving around a blind man named Robert and the narrator, has a deeper meaning, however, when its style and key elements are analyzed.

He was born in Oregon in His father was a sawmill worker. He married one year out of high school and had two children. He worked various jobs to support his small family and in the late s and throughout the s he began drinking heavily. When he got his drinking problem under control, he began. He was named as well-known in American literature. The old friend, Robertis blind, which the narrator identifies as Robert's defining characteristic.
As the story begins, the narrator is troubled by the impending visit for reasons he can't quite explain, though he attributes it to Robert's disability.
As the narrator explains, Robert's wife had died recently and so he was visiting her family in Connecticut. As the narrator and his wife live nearby, Robert arranged to visit, and is on his way. The wife had worked briefly for Robert a decade before in Seattle. They have kept in touch by mailing tapes to one another, on which each narrated his or her life in detail. His wife had been living on the West coast with a man she was going to marry, and found Robert's ad seeking someone to read to him.
On the last day she worked there, Robert who the narrator continues to call "the blind man" asked to touch her face and she agreed.
He ran his hands sensitively all over her face and neck, and the experience proved profound to the wife, who is an aspiring poet and has tried to memorialize his touch. She showed it to the narrator when they started dating, but he didn't care for it. He admits he might not understand poetry. The narrator tells more of his wife's past. The man she was waiting for in Seattle had been her "childhood sweetheart," and after they married, they lived a military life as he was transferred to bases.
One year after leaving Seattle, she contacted Robert, and they thereafter began to exchange the tapes on which they would tell each other their deep secrets. They continued to exchange tapes as her life as an Air Force wife got lonelier and lonelier, until she finally tried to kill herself with pills.
She ended up throwing them up, but used the occasion to pursue a divorce, which was followed by her dating the narrator. She once asked the narrator to listen to one of Robert's tapes. On it, he heard his own name spoken, a strange experience.
They were interrupted by someone knocking, an interruption which pleased him. The story jumps into its main action as the wife prepares dinner and the narrator glibly suggests taking Robert bowling. She begs him to welcome Robert and chides him for having no friends, "period. He asks her if Beulah was "a Negro," which makes her angry but also leads her to share more of Robert's past.
Beulah began reading for Robert the summer after she had left, and they were soon thereafter wed. After eight years of marriage, Beulah was diagnosed with cancer and died. He feels sorry for Beulah, "a woman who could go on day after day and never receive the smallest compliment from her beloved.
It's conspiratorial because he's telling us how he really feels, but without getting mushy about it or trying to make us like him.
The narrator tells us what's going down, without telling us how to feel about it. He trusts us enough to share the moment with us. Underneath the constant stream of lowbrow wisecracks, often in the form of jokes about blind people, we hear a tone of sincerity. He isn't softening things up for us.
He's intent on giving us the unadorned truth. The narrator knows he's in a rut, but feels little hope of ever getting out of it. He never imagined that a blind man spending the night might show him that solutions to his problems might be right before his eyes, but only if he closes them. When the story is over, we might feel like something mystical has happened. Indeed, it has, but all within the confines of what reads a lot like reality. And seeing the extraordinary in the seemingly ordinary is what realism is all about.
As you know, a "comedy" doesn't have to be funny, and not all funny stories are considered "comedies. Admittedly, some people might find the humor crude, sad, or even sick. For those readers, the narrator's transformation might be in his ceasing to make offensive wise cracks as he connects meaningfully with Robert. Not all postmodern works deal in realism, but postmodernism and realism complement each other nicely.
While realism tries to show regular people living their lives, postmodernism interrogates reality. Now, don't be daunted by postmodernism. It can get very complicated, but a basic knowledge of postmodernism doesn't have to hurt. Here's a little history, and some of the key ideas that we see playing out in "Cathedral. Similarly, postmodernism is a response to the events of World War II — particularly to the Holocaust and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as other instances of genocide and horror.
The magnitude of these catastrophes caused many artists and philosophers to question all their previously held assumptions, including ideas of what is real and what is imaginary.
In spite of these somber themes, postmodernism is playful, fun, experimental, and loaded with contradictions, parody, surprises, and games. The expansion of information through the communication technologies is a big focus of many postmodern dialogues. It observes how we process information, how we sort through the huge amounts of information coming at us to decide what to keep and what to throw out.My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed.
Sometimes they were led by seeing-eye dogs. A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to. This admission from the narrator illustrates his close-mindedness and unwillingness to experience something new. The epiphany at the end of the story finds the narrator opening himself to new experiences, to a new way of looking at the world.
But before that, the narrator is disassociated from himself — he sees the world through the TV and movies — and has no interest in seeing how things work in the real world. Much of his personality defect is apparent in this quote.
And I guess I was. Every night I smoked dope and stayed up as long as I could before I fell asleep. My wife and I hardly ever went to bed at the same time.
When I did go to sleep, I had these dreams. Sometimes I'd wake up from one of them, my heart going crazy. Though generally glib and arrogant, the narrator in this passage reveals his intuition that he's not as happy or fulfilled as he might think. He probably isn't self-aware enough to admit his longing to himself, but Robert inspires him to realize that he is lacking for company.
Further, "dreams," the metaphoric value of which are pretty clear, are something he deals with. He is haunted by dreams of what he doesn't have, and it's this unadmitted longing that is given shape through his experience of drawing the cathedral with Robert. His fingers rode my fingers as my hand went over the paper. It was like nothing else in my life up to now. Then he said, 'I think that's it. I think you got it,' he said.
What do you think? But I had my eyes closed. I thought I'd keep them that way for a little longer. I thought it was something I ought to do.
My eyes were still closed. I was in my house. I knew that. But I didn't feel like I was inside anything. This passage details the epiphany that strikes the narrator at the end of the story. It details his shift towards freedom from the self-imposed confines of his own life. As he reconsiders the meaning of 'sight' in the passage, he leaves his eyes closed but still confesses to 'seeing' somethinghe realizes that he has trapped himself in the walls of his life and house, while ignoring that a greater freedom of not being "inside anything" was available to him.
By no longer looking at the life that surrounds him, he allows himself to 'see' the greater world.
But, for all I know, I guess it didn't matter that much to Bud and Olla.Check out our full list of predictions for today's and tonight's games (Sunday December 10th, 2017) below.

Merse was about par for the course in last weekend, with six correct results and one correct scoreline.
Live on These aren't the games that matter for West Ham. Watford are really good away from home and Burnley haven't been as good at home, so you'd expect an away win, but I think Burnley will sneak this one. Burnley are just solid. They have had some really good results, so they are so hard to bet against. They are going to get it right at home soon. They are right in it now, and a win here will really help them out.
Brighton 1-5 Liverpool Brighton 1-5 Liverpool Bournemouth won't be able to cope with Wilfried Zaha. They can attack at will, but sometimes when quality players get at them, they really can struggle. It will be a really good game, as both teams will have a go.
Such a hard one to call. I have seen Huddersfield a few times this season. They have got some amazing results, and all credit to the manager for setting them up to win those games. At home they are a force, but not so much away from home. They remind me of Fulham a few years ago, when they had a great home record. It takes its toll in the end, though, and the home wins can dry up when you put too much pressure on your home form.
I can't separate these two. The thing with Swansea is their games haven't really been that difficult so far. They have played a lot of teams around them, and they still haven't got the points. Going 1-0 up at Stoke, if that stays 1-0 for longer, then it becomes a different game. They have to win this, and I think they win. It will be a huge result.
Against Swansea, Stoke fell over the line, but sometimes when you win a game like that, everything is rosy. However, on this big pitch, Tottenham are too good for Stoke. Tottenham need to win this game, otherwise they will be struggling for the top four. I think Mauricio Pochettino started off their poor run to be honest, when he took Harry Kane and Dele Alli off against Arsenal, when the game was still in the balance.
Their performances have been nowhere near as good since.Based on your location, we recommend that you select:. Lines and moves are discussed openly on TV, and covers are mentioned right next to game stories. Media outlets nationwide turn to a handful of people for insight and predictions into point spreads and odds. And the man they look to more than any other is RJ Bell, a self-proclaimed modern-day Jimmy the Greek. Various titles, some generous and others outright falsebetting expert, professional handicapper, Vegas oddsmakerare used to identify Bell when he is interviewed, but his role as head of Pregame.
Pregame, which Bell started in 2005, sells sports-betting picks. Bell says they are winning pro bettors, and by paying for their advice, the implication is that you will win, too.
After all, they do this for a living. Mainstream media now brings the heads of these services on air and passes them off as analysts, affording people like Bell streams of new customers and free advertising a salesman could scarcely imagine. Scribes and sportscasters alike present Bell as the oracle of Las Vegas. You can hear him on Stephen A. A few years ago, he wrote a regular betting column for Grantland. On Twitter, his followers number more than 117,000.
From a young age I watched haggard men peddle worthless tip sheets at the racetrack. If a handicapper truly had an edge, I quickly learned, he would guard it. He would have everything to losequite literallyby advertising it.
This axiom seems to escape journalists increasingly wading into covering sports betting, to say nothing of the desperate customers paying for picks. I spent a year investigating the tout industry and discovered the same old racket, wrapped in sophisticated-looking, digital-era packaging.
